What Maurice Is Reading Now

I have a plethora of books waiting to be read. I have books from publishers, books from work, and books I just want to read for the sheer pleasure of reading. I am including only a smattering in this post. Do not wish to overwhelm any of you.

Russia

The Winter Palace

I finished THE WINTER PALACE by Eva Stachniak last week.I took my time. I wanted to savor it. This novel  is perfect to read in tandem with the new biography by Robert Massie called CATHERINE THE GREAT.

A Walk Across The Sun

A WALK ACROSS THE SUN by Corban Addison takes place in U.S. and India. Deals with human trafficking in the here and now. John Grisham, for the first time ever, has given an author a heads up.

Witchcraft

A Discovery Of Witches

A DISCOVERY OF WITCHES by Deborah Harkness came to me from the publisher and I have yet to read it. It is quite long, but the prose looks very good, and my interest was piqued at the thought of writing similar to the old Anne Rice books. Will keep you posted.

Muslim America

American Dervish

AMERICAN DERVISH by Ayad Akhtar is coming from the publisher. I have heard some chatter about it and all is positive.  This author explains through fiction how he has dealt with being a Muslim American.

Joan of Arc

The Maid

And now for the one I am reading as we speak. I have been looking at the cover of THE MAID for weeks now. Picked it up last week. Almost put it back down. Something drew me back. Now that I am into it, I am very involved. We visited the site of the burning at the stake of Joan Of Arc in Ruen, France a couple of years ago. It is a lovely spot in the center of a gorgeous city. I am hoping to find some photos to add to my post when I write it. So far, it is keeping me turning the pages and wanting more.

Three Books I Received For Christmas

Tender

Tender

This big, fat cookbook is full of drop dead gorgeous photos of lovely, healthy vegetables in all their glory. Even less than enthusiastic fans of broccoli and cauliflower will find this one hard to put down. I LOVE it!

Hemingway's Boat

Hemingway's Boat

HEMINGWAY’S BOAT is on my list of the best of nonfiction reading for this year. Hendrickson has done a bang-up job delving deeply into the life of the man we thought we already knew. So happy to have gotten it.

WW11

The Lost Wife

Just look at the cover of this one. And it’s a trade paper.  I am anxious to get into this one. WWII. The writing looks good. Book is already on my table at work. Will keep you posted.

I have promised myself a day of reading and relaxing with the kitties today. After rushing around preparing for the holiday, it is a pleasure to be home with the kitties. They are enjoying the open windows; and each of them has a window to sit in.

I don’t want to forget to thank my generous husband for purchasing books when our house is so full of them already. But, there is always room for the best books!

Merry Christmas Dear Readers

Christmas Cactus

Christmas Cactus

I want to take this opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas, and Happy Holidays. I just had to add a photo of my gorgeous Christmas Cactus. It always does its job by flowering just in time for the big day. It hasn’t disappointed again this year.

In the spirit of giving, someone enjoyed playing Santa at our local K Mart. I had  heard secret santas were paying off layaway items in parts of the country. Well, someone around here got in on the deal. What a kind and generous and selfless thing to do for the holidays.

I look forward to spending the day with most of my family. And the part of the family not here will be visited via Skype later in the day.

Merry Christmas  and Happy Holidays to you all from me, and Maurice!

New Titles & Upcoming Titles

Russia

The Winter Palace

Just take a look at this luscious cover! This is the perfect accompaniment to the historical biography of Catherine The Great by Robert Massie. Read them in tandem and move to yet another level. Eva Strachniak has indeed done her homework. This one arrives on the scene in January, just as we ready ourselves for the perfect winter read.

Niagra Falls

The Odds

I read the advance copy of this one in one day. I love Stewart O’Nan.  He gives us a novella that stands out in this economy like a bright light. Take a middle aged couple, give them money woes, take away their jobs, and give them odds.

Thorn

Dead Last

I used to read all the James W. Hall books with the Thorn character. Somewhere along the years I got sidetracked and lost Thorn. But, I have found him again.

Giveaway: The Doctor And The Diva

Doctor and Diva

The Doctor and the Diva

This lovely novel is now available in trade paperback form. Last year, when it first appeared on the scene, the hardcover was gorgeous, but I passed on reading it because I thought the title  somewhat trite. I feared it was nothing more than a romance novel. But, alas, I was wrong!

The publisher at Penguin Group  recently offered me a copy to review. I decided to give it a go. I read it in a snap. Totally enjoyed traveling along with the story to exotic places such as Trinidad and Tuscany. And the writing is superb.

Erika von Kessler and her husband Peter have been trying to conceive for six years as the novel opens in Boston in 1904. They’ve seen all the fertility specialists and done everything possible, but to no avail. Then they hear that of a young new Doctor: Dr. Ravell. Can he help them? Erika is really sick and tired of exposing her every private part, and is not keen on yet another exposure. But, she agrees.

Erika has one great passion in life: singing. She has an amazing operatic voice, one she has been training for years, hoping to be “noticed.” Her dream is to go to Italy and become famous. So, her plan is that if this last attempt at having a child fails, she will leave her life and go to Italy.

The relationship Dr. Ravell cultivates with Peter and Erika becomes important to all three of them. And Erika does indeed become pregnant. It is truly a miracle. And how does Ravell accomplish what no other specialist has been able to do? Ahh, that is the question of the century.

This lovely story takes you to the exotic locale of Trinidad where strange and exciting experiences take place. Much about the flora and fauna will captivate you on this haunting isle. The hill towns of Italy, the piazza’s of Venice, the scenes of Milan, and the sights and sounds of the Arno in Florence will light your senses on fire and fire your desire to keep reading.

There is much to contemplate for discussion in THE DOCTOR AND THE DIVA. Book clubs will find it the center of much chatter. And I know that the author has been known to attend book club discussions via Skype.

So, with no further ado, I introduce my giveaway. Penguin has been kind enough to offer two lovely copies of THE DOCTOR AND THE DIVA by Adrienne McDonnell for my giveaway. All I ask is that you have a U.S. address and no P.O. boxes, please. Just leave a comment with your email address. The giveaway will run until midnight, Sunday, December, 17. Don’t hold back. The more of you who comment, the better chances of even more really good giveaways in the future.
